Russia is experiencing operational disruptions in obtaining Chinese-manufactured jet engines for its long-range strike drones following coordinated diplomatic and intelligence interventions by Ukraine and its international partners, Interfax-Ukraine reported.
Speaking at the annual Yalta European Strategy (YES 2026) conference in Kyiv, Deputy Head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) Vadym Skibitsky underscored the critical necessity of expanding multilateral sanctions targeting supply chains that sustain Moscow’s aerial bombardment capabilities.
“That is why I emphasize once again: international sanctions are needed. Today, the Russian Federation has certain problems with jet engines for drones. We are talking about engines from China. This is the result of our actions and the actions of our partners,” Skibitsky stated.
The intelligence official noted that Beijing is acutely aware of the regulatory and economic risks facing its domestic industrial sector if it deepens its commercial and logistical entanglement with Russia’s wartime defense industry.
Skibitsky added that Ukrainian military intelligence has mapped the full network of Russian enterprises and joint production ventures operating alongside Chinese suppliers. However, he cautioned that targeting these installations directly remains an operational challenge due to geographic depth.
“Unfortunately, they are located far from our border – at a distance of over 2,000 kilometers. Hitting such targets is not easy. This is possible only with long-range strike assets, particularly unmanned aerial vehicles,” Skibitsky explained.
Manufacturing bottlenecks
In recent weeks, the Russian military has increasingly relied on turbojet-powered loitering munitions and hybrid drone-missiles as its primary aerial strike vector against Ukrainian urban centers and critical infrastructure.
The primary platforms deployed include the Geran-4 and lower-cost “Banderol” loitering munitions.
Despite their heavy operational deployment, Ukrainian technical analysts indicate that Moscow is grappling with inventory constraints.
Serhiy Beskrestnov, an adviser to the Ukrainian presidency on defense technology, stated that Russian forces currently lack sufficient stockpiles of jet-powered Shaheds to stage the mass saturation raids seen earlier in the war, when hundreds of propeller-driven drones were launched simultaneously.
Instead, Beskrestnov noted that the Russian military is fielding newly produced jet drones literally straight off the assembly line to sustain continuous pressure against Ukrainian air defenses.
Air defense challenges posed by turbojet systems
The deployment of turbojet engines represents a major evolution from earlier propeller-driven Shahed models powered by internal combustion engines.
Equipped with miniature aircraft-grade turbine engines, the newer drones operate at altitudes of several kilometers and achieve speeds between 400 and 600 kilometers per hour, nearly three times faster than piston-engine variants.
Their increased velocity and cruising altitude allow them to outpace Ukraine’s primary fleet of propeller-driven anti-drone interceptors, effectively functioning in an air defense profile more comparable to low-altitude cruise missiles.
While Ukrainian air defenses routinely intercept over 90% of slower Shahed variants, interception rates for jet-powered drones have hovered near 60%, forcing the Ukrainian military to commit high-end surface-to-air missiles and combat aircraft to counter the threat.
Technical teardowns of captured munitions have repeatedly identified Chinese-sourced components within the guidance and propulsion systems of Russian drones.
Chinese manufacturers – such as Shenzhen-based Telefly Telecommunications Equipment – have supplied microturbine engines and electronic sub-assemblies to Russian defense contractors.
Although Western sanctions have targeted shell companies and intermediaries facilitating component transfers through Hong Kong and third countries, Ukrainian defense officials have reiterated that throttling the flow of foreign turbine engines remains pivotal to containing Russian long-range aerial assaults.
