Russia struck a school being used to distribute humanitarian aid in Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhzhia—and Ukrainian officials say a second wave of bombs hit the shelter where people had taken cover. President Zelenskyy reported 24 people killed at the time of recording, with 27 others reported missing. These were people coming for help, and people trying to save them. How does the world look away from this?
And the danger is not over. Zelenskyy warns of another massive Russian strike, with energy and logistics infrastructure in the crosshairs. Russian bombers, ballistic missiles and drones are part of the threat described in this broadcast, while Ukraine faces serious air-defense challenges. With the U.S. midterm elections about to dominate the news, will Ukraine’s warnings and its dead be pushed out of sight?
Then comes a statement that has to be heard to be believed. Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki echoes Moscow’s narrative, portraying the war in Ukraine as a Western invention to contain Russia—and arguing that Russia should be allowed to contribute to global peace and prosperity. I put those remarks beside the destruction in Komyshuvakha. That contrast exposes exactly what is wrong with the Kremlin’s story.

“In his video address late on Monday, Zelensky said 26 people were now known to have died.
He earlier said that “the Russians could not have been unaware that the local residents who remained in Komyshuvakha received humanitarian aid there every week” on Monday.
“This is yet another proof that Russia does not want any de-escalation.”
He said that after a recent successful joint Russian-Ukrainian operation to evacuate civilians from the Russia-occupied southern city of Oleshky during a temporary ceasefire brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump, “there was a moment when the next steps could show that peace is possible”.
“With such killings, Russia is sending the exact opposite signal – Russia is counting on further killings,” Zelensky said.”
