US President Donald Trump recently called Russia’s alleged abandonment of plans to occupy all of Ukraine a “very significant concession.” However, the Kremlin launched a full-scale invasion precisely for this purpose, and subsequent years of bloody war have demonstrated Russia’s inability to achieve this goal.
Therefore, “renouncing” something that Russia is incapable of doing can hardly be considered a “major concession,” according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Analysts recalled that in 2022, Russia expected to capture Kyiv in February-March in order to force Ukraine to completely surrender, overthrow the current Ukrainian government, and disarm the Ukrainian army, which would mean the complete defeat of Ukraine.
Russia failed to achieve this goal. The Ukrainian military, with limited Western support, stopped the Russian offensive on the Ukrainian capital, as well as the advance of Russian troops in the east and south of the country. And then, by early April, they forced the Russians to flee from the Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions, and a few months later liberated most of the Kharkiv region and part of the Kherson region, including Kherson.
And it is unlikely that Russia will even be able to repeat the achievement of launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in the foreseeable future.
“Russian forces are not yet in a position to launch an offensive operation that could lead to the capture of Kyiv or the crossing of the Dnieper River in southern Ukraine, and have spent 2024 in desperate battles to seize territory nine-tenths the size of Rhode Island. Russia does not have the military power to seize the rest of Ukraine in the absence of a full-scale mobilization of Russian society, and perhaps not as long as the West continues to support Ukraine,” ISW believes.
However, Russia’s inability to seize all of Ukraine does not mean that Moscow has stopped dreaming about it.
“Kremlin mouthpieces, including Russian Security Council Secretary Dmitry Medvedev, have laid the rhetorical groundwork for Russia to eventually lay claim to most or all of Ukraine. On April 24, Russian officials also doubled down on their demands for a change of government in Ukraine and rhetoric aimed at undermining the legitimacy of the current Ukrainian government. Together, these two efforts suggest that Putin retains his goal of controlling all of Ukraine but is constrained by Russia’s inability to achieve this goal militarily,” the ISW concluded.
As a reminder, ISW previously stated that Russia is trying to dictate terms regarding Ukraine and threatens Europe. Thus, the official Kremlin spokesman and the Secretary of the Russian Security Council, on the eve and after the massive drone and missile attack on Ukraine on the night of April 24, repeated a number of long-standing demands of dictator Vladimir Putin about the “goals” of the war. These are narratives that deliberately hinder the establishment of a stable and lasting peace in Ukraine and create conditions for future Russian aggression from an advantageous position.
The main problem for Ukraine are attacks from the air. The mafia ground forces have been shredded into a force that can, at best, take a football field here and a hedgerow there at great cost in blood and steel.

I can’t figure out how in the hell the cockroaches can carry out an attack on NATO when it cannot even conquer Ukraine and is in the midst of an already huge war that stripped it of most of its fighting capability.
