Russia is urging aviation industry leaders to ease sanctions on aircraft spare parts and overflights, Reuters reported , citing working documents and a source familiar with the situation.

According to the source, Moscow considers Western sanctions against its aviation industry “illegal coercive measures.” It is noted that they have blocked Russia’s access to foreign aircraft and spare parts for them. This has led to the fact that Russian airlines are forced to purchase spare parts for more than 700 aircraft, mainly Airbus and Boeing, through indirect import routes.

In addition, Russian airline aircraft are prohibited from flying in the airspace of European Union member states, as well as other allied countries, including the United Kingdom.

The Russians are now trying to negotiate a relaxation of sanctions, including on spare parts they say are critical to flight safety, the agency said. Moscow is making its case to regulators and other delegates at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Innovation Fair 2025 in Montreal.
