On the night of February 3, Russian occupiers launched a massive attack on Kharkiv and the Kharkiv region. The shelling damaged critical facilities at Kharkiv Thermal Power Plant No. 5, as well as the Kharkivska and Zalyutino electrical substations.
The Kharkiv City Council reported on Telegram , citing Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov, that a state of emergency has been declared in the city. He reported that some equipment at Kharkiv Thermal Power Plant No. 5 and the Kharkivska and Zalyutino electrical substations had suffered significant damage.
Terekhov also stated that heat supply has been cut off to 929 properties, 853 of which are residential buildings. He added that 105,000 customers are without heat.
“The lack of heating and the disruption of life support systems during the winter pose a real threat to the lives and health of people, especially children, the elderly, and people with limited mobility,” the mayor of Kharkiv emphasized.
Earlier, Terekhov reported on his Telegram channel that due to enemy shelling in Kharkiv, the coolant in the heating system of 820 buildings fed by one of the largest combined heat and power plants would have to be drained.Read also:
“I understand how difficult this is in minus-20 degrees Celsius weather. But an unprecedented enemy attack on critical infrastructure leaves no other option. Our specialists see no other solution. Therefore, all 101 Invincibility Points in the city will be open 24/7 – you can warm up there, have hot drinks, and charge your devices. If necessary, we will quickly deploy additional warming points,” the mayor added.
Russia has dealt the most powerful blow to Ukraine’s energy sector since the beginning of the year – what is known?
DTEK previously reported that on February 3, Russians launched the most powerful attack on the energy sector since the beginning of 2026. The attack targeted power generation and distribution facilities, including combined heat and power plants (CHPs) operating in heating mode in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro.
DTEK noted that missiles and drones also attacked a company facility in the Odesa region. As a result of the occupiers’ attack, thousands of people were left without power.
“The power grid is operating with significant limitations. Power engineers are doing everything possible to stabilize power supply to the affected areas,” DTEK emphasized.
