On the night of February 14, Russian occupiers entered a shelter above the destroyed 4th power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. This was reported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who noted that it was a drone strike:

“A Russian attack drone with a high-explosive warhead hit the shelter protecting the world from radiation from the destroyed 4th power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant last night.”

Zelensky recalled that Ukraine built this shelter together with other countries in Europe and the world, together with America – “with everyone who wants real security for people.”

“The only state in the world that can attack such facilities, occupy the territory of nuclear power plants and conduct military operations without any regard for the consequences is today’s Russia. And this is a terrorist threat to the entire world,” the president emphasized.

He reported that the shelter at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was damaged by this drone:

“The fire has been extinguished. The radiation level has not increased at the moment, and this is being monitored constantly. According to initial estimates, the damage to the shelter is significant.”

Updated . Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal noted that rescuers had extinguished the fire and the radiation levels were normal:

“This terrorist act once again demonstrates the Kremlin’s cruelty and its indifference to human lives. A strike on a shelter protecting against the radiation threat is a challenge to the entire world. The enemy understands only force. Therefore, we call on our partners to introduce decisive sanctions against Russia, in particular, its nuclear industry. We must weaken the aggressor as much as possible.”

The attack was also confirmed by the IAEA. It is reported that the team heard an explosion at night at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The drone crashed into the roof, there were no casualties.

IAEA Chairman Grossi noted that this incident and the recent increase in military activity around the Zaporizhzhya NPP “underscore the ongoing risks to nuclear safety”:

“There is no room for complacency and the IAEA remains on high alert.”

As reported earlier, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, US Vice President J.D. Vance said that the US authorities will impose sanctions against Russia and send their troops to Ukraine if Russian dictator Vladimir Putin refuses to negotiate an end to the war.

Vance said Ukraine must have “sovereign independence.” Otherwise, he said, the U.S. would impose sanctions on Moscow and possibly launch military action if Putin did not agree to a peace deal with Ukraine that would guarantee Kyiv’s long-term independence.

As is known, the Munich Security Conference will be held from February 14 to 16, where national security issues will be discussed. In particular, leaders from all over the world will touch upon the issue of a full-scale war launched by Russia against Ukraine.
