The Secretary of State said the next stage would focus on strengthening enforcement of the restrictions already in place.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington has effectively reached its limit in imposing new sanctions against Russia. He made this statement while speaking to reporters following the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Canada.

“There’s basically nothing left we can sanction. We hit their biggest oil companies—that’s what everyone was demanding,” Rubio said.

He added that instead of new restrictions, the US will focus on enforcing existing sanctions, particularly combating the so-called “shadow fleet” that Moscow uses to circumvent oil restrictions. According to Rubio, this will be a key area in the future work of the sanctions coalition, and European partners should play a more active role, as “a significant portion of the vessels transit closer to their territories.”Video of the day

Assessing the Kremlin’s position on the possibility of a peaceful settlement, the Secretary of State emphasized that “one can only judge by actions.” “Moscow has clearly stated what they want – they want the rest of the Donetsk region, and such demands are unacceptable for the Ukrainian side,” he emphasized.

Rubio also commented on the new wave of missile strikes on Ukrainian territory, which, in his opinion, are aimed at “destroying the power grid and demoralizing the population.”

He confirmed that the United States is in ongoing discussions with the Ukrainian authorities regarding assistance in stabilizing the power grid, which is “deteriorating every year.” According to the Secretary of State, this includes both the transfer of specialized equipment and air defense systems to protect critical infrastructure.

“If this equipment is destroyed a week after it’s installed, it remains a problem. And that’s been the case for the last two or three years,” Rubio added.
