The Russian nuclear industry was not subject to EU sanctions due to the bloody invasion of Ukraine.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Petr Szijjártó said that Russian nuclear giant Rosatom will start building two new nuclear reactors in Hungary in the coming weeks.
“The deal struck between Russia and an EU state in 2014 aims to expand the existing Paks nuclear power plant. The Russian nuclear industry has not been subject to EU sanctions due to the bloody invasion of Ukraine. Actions to isolate and sanction oil and gas exports have not been unconditionally supported by Hungary,” the BBC said .

“Let construction begin! This is a big step, an important milestone. In this way, we will ensure Hungary’s energy security in the long term and protect Hungarians from sharp fluctuations in energy prices,” Szijjarto said.

I’m sure that Hungary’s foreign relations department (or whatever their equivalent is) probably is “excusing” this on the basis of “previously agreed upon contractual deadlines.” Though I think it’s putting them more under the kremlin’s thumb, maybe in 5 or 10 years, they might find themselves as another vassal puppet state like Belarus.
So I wonder they’d say if Russia invaded them too? Before Yanukovych, Ukraine was on its way to becoming a puppet of russia, and then the Dignity Revolution allowed the Ukrainian people to take back their country. Will Hungarians need something like that for them later? Or maybe they’re too timid to fight back against Russian control?
