Pre-election polls did not predict such success for the anti-Western candidate.

Almost unknown outside Romania, far-right NATO critic Calin Georgescu has won the first round of the country’s presidential election. If he wins the second round, it would deal a major blow to Western support for Ukraine, Sky News reports .

With 99.9% of the votes counted, Georgescu received 22.9%, while the center-right Elena Lasconi was second with 19.16%. The gap is not very large, so everything will be decided in the second round, where these two will face off. However, it is significant that according to polls before the elections, Georgescu received only about 5% of the votes.

“Never in 34 years of our democracy have we seen such a surge compared to the polls,” said political commentator Radu Magdin about the results of the second round.

Georgescu has repeatedly called for an end to support for Ukraine and questioned Romania’s own membership in NATO, arguing that the military alliance would not protect it if attacked. He has previously called Vladimir Putin one of the few “real leaders” in the world and expressed admiration for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

  1. Well, Ukraine’s dilemma always was a struggle between being absorbed by ruSSia or the EU, never to be fully independent from both since 2003. Ukraine will need a leader who works exclusively for the vital interests of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. With ruSSia trying to destroy Ukraine and the West not helping, i think it’s overdue!

  2. Not sure why people in the free world are opting to become unfree. But, if they prefer to be serfs, more power to them … or not.
