Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, on Thursday vowed to get Ukraine additional aid despite GOP pushback.
“We need to give ’em everything they need. And if this administration won’t give it to them, then I submitted that we write in our appropriations bill, we write the weapons that he [Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy] asked for, that this administration won’t give,” McCaul, the chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told reporters after meeting with Zelenskyy at the U.S. Capitol.
“We will get it done,” he added. “There are a lot of political machinations right now, but we are going to get it passed.”
Members of the House and Senate, 28 of them, earlier this week signed a letter requesting additional information on aid already provided to Ukraine.
“The American people deserve to know what their money has gone to,” the lawmakers wrote. “How is the counteroffensive going? Are the Ukrainians any closer to victory than they were 6 months ago? What is our strategy, and what is the president’s exit plan? What does the administration define as victory in Ukraine?
“What assistance has the United States provided Ukraine under Title 10? It would be an absurd abdication of congressional responsibility to grant this request without knowing the answers to these questions. For these reasons — and certainly until we receive answers to the questions above and others forthcoming — we oppose the additional expenditure for war in Ukraine included in your request.”
The U.S. has appropriated $114 billion in supplemental funding for Ukraine since Russia’s 2022 invasion.
McCaul slammed the Biden administration’s response to its “slowness” in [getting] Ukraine weapons.
“It’s taken too long. So, we can write this into the supplemental. And that would be my intention.”

This is the kind of support that Ukraine needs, not the constant dithering and appeasement.

We live in a strange world where one faction of the opposition party in the US is attacking the ruling Democrats for having the temerity to help a country they despise and the other faction is attacking them for not doing enough.
Mitt Romney is retiring because he thinks his faction, ie the good guys, is being drowned out by the putler faction.
I wouldn’t be putting half of the USA in one basket of “Putler’s faction”. That certainly wouldn’t help Ukraine either.
I made no such claim. I don’t know how many in the general population support putler. Last year the GOP’s own internal polling suggested that 5% of Republican voters are rooting for a putler victory. The evidence suggests that figure is much higher now.
The GOP has a Putin wing and it’s expanding. You only have to see the size of its lead in the polling. That is why Romney is retiring. As he sees it, he’s lost.
What percentage of the party does Rep McCaul represent? It’s obviously distressingly low, because those presidential candidates with a similar position to him on Ukraine are polling in single figures.
The putler wing is fighting tooth and nail to end support for Ukraine. It has three players who are campaigning on it and they are winning. A vote for any of them is a vote for genocide.
The Dems have their own dangerous arsehole too; a person with almost identical position on Ukraine as the GOP’s putler wing; RFK Jr.
But there is little or no chance of him getting the Dem nomination.
With the GOP, it’s a near certainty that a defacto or actual kremlin asset will be nominated.
It is the putler wing of the GOP that is causing serious pain for Ukraine right now and it caused Zel to make injudicious remarks about future plans to liberate cities:

Such talk gives hope. If Biden is too much a pathetic coward, then find another way to give Ukraine what it needs. I hope this can be done, and this, very soon.
