Record “minus” of personnel and a steady decline in potential: analysis of the losses of the Russian army in Ukraine per month

2.05.2026

In April 2026, the Russian occupiers suffered the heaviest losses in personnel since the beginning of the year. In addition, two absolute records were set for the entire period of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in the categories of motor transport and artillery. And one of the reasons for this was the completely unsuccessful start of the spring offensive campaign of the Russian Armed Forces.

More details about this can be found in the material of the joint project OBOZ.UA and the group “Information Resistance”.

Personnel losses

In April, the Russian occupation forces suffered the highest personnel losses since the beginning of the year – 32,980 people.

Moreover, the increase in losses is noted for the second month in a row, which is not surprising, because it was in March that the spring-summer offensive campaign of the ROV started, which literally immediately choked.

Against the backdrop of high losses of enemy personnel, one of the lowest indicators of territory captured in a month in more than six months is noted – 142 km².

Since May of last year, the ROVs have been capturing from 400 to 500 km² of Ukrainian territory per month, suffering approximately the same losses as they do now. Thus, the average rate of territory capture has decreased by 4 or more times, while the level of losses remains high.

The proportion of losses to the territories being captured also shows one of the highest indicators – 232 bodies per 1 km², which has been steadily increasing since the beginning of the year. And compared to the summer of 2025, this indicator has increased almost 4 times.

It is worth noting that since the beginning of 2026, as well as during the spring-summer offensive campaign itself, we can note some of the worst indicators of the enemy’s advance and one of the highest dynamics of losses in the captured territories.

During four months of hostilities, the ROV lost over 122,740 personnel, capturing just over 661 km² of Ukrainian territory.

That is, since the beginning of the year, slightly more area has been captured than the average area captured by the DOM in the summer of 2025 per month.

All the figures mentioned above confirm the undeniable fact of the exhaustion of the Russian occupation forces and the loss of combat capability to conduct successful combined-arms offensive campaigns. The Russian army, now completely focused on infantry warfare, has significantly reduced its potential in terms of effectiveness and can solve tasks of mainly tactical importance.

Tank losses

During April 2026, the Russian occupiers, despite the spring phase of the offensive campaign, did not intensify the use of MBTs in battles and losses in this category turned out to be quite average – 75 tanks.

I don’t think we’ll see a dramatic change in performance in this category anytime soon.

Losses of armored vehicles

Over the past month, there have been no global changes in the use of armored combat vehicles in the ROV, as well as in the tank category. Losses were quite routine – 169 units.

Artillery losses

In April 2026, the Russian occupiers suffered record losses in the category of cannon artillery – 1,875 units.

The growth in this category has been noted since last month, when, against the backdrop of the start of the offensive campaign, the ROV lost 1,448 barrels. And the ongoing failed actions of Russian troops along the entire line of contact led to this record.

MLRS losses

During April, the Russian occupiers lost 45 units of multiple launch rocket systems, which is not a record figure, unlike cannon artillery. But MLRS themselves have long been a scarce artillery item for the enemy, which is not surprising.

Air defense losses

In April, air defense losses in the ROV amounted to 19 units.

Compared to the losses in March, this is not the highest figure, but it is quite acceptable given the intensity of the hunt for Russian air defense systems and radars by the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Unmanned Systems Forces.

Vehicle losses

The second absolute record set by the troops of the aggressor country in April is the loss of motor vehicles, which exceeded 6,431 units! It is important to note that the previous record was set in March – 6,068.

The reason for such losses in the category of motor vehicles, which also includes other vehicles (such as motorcycles), is not only the offensive of the Russian Armed Forces, but also the significant expansion of the depth of strikes by the Ukrainian Defense Forces against Russian logistics.

Today, Ukrainian drones fly to a depth of 60-70 km from the line of combat contact, which has significantly expanded the capabilities of the SOU to influence the enemy’s rear logistics both in the temporarily occupied territories and in Russia itself, and has also increased the rate of losses of road transport of the ROV.

In total, since the beginning of 2026, the Russian occupiers have lost more than 20,500 units of vehicles, and since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, losses in this category have exceeded 92,000 units.

Losses of special equipment

In this category, the DOM has not set any special records for over a year. The indicator is quite traditional, although slightly higher than the average – 43 units.

Conclusions

April 2026 continued the enemy’s disastrous performance of March in terms of conducting the 2026 spring-summer offensive campaign.

Russia continues to try to solve its tasks in the combat zone primarily using human resources – the infantry component. Of the auxiliary components, in addition to drones and aviation, there is a high level of concomitant use of artillery and road transport. All this leads to record levels of losses in these categories.

In turn, despite the intense fighting and extremely high level of casualties, the effectiveness of the ROV’s combat operations is reduced to exclusively tactical achievements of the goal, and with significantly smaller territorial gains than in 2025.

April became a litmus test not only for the spring phase of the ROV offensive campaign. Overall, the first four months of the year demonstrate one of the worst dynamics for the Russian occupiers since the autumn-winter offensive of 2023-2024.

The demilitarization and denazification of the Russian army are proceeding strictly according to plan!

  1. It’s always wonderful to see cockroaches getting wasted. It’s never a bad thing to watch cockroaches getting slaughtered. A butchered cockroach is a good cockroach.
