Putin to demand Ukraine’s surrender at talks – The Times

Putin wants all the annexed territories plus the political reorganization of Ukraine.

Donald Trump’s rhetoric towards Russia has become much tougher in recent times , prompting the Kremlin to react. But the response so far remains only in words, and it does not seem that Vladimir Putin is ready to give up his maximalist goals in Ukraine, The Times writes .

The author specifically refers to Putin’s emergency 2 a.m. appearance on the air after the West and Ukraine gave him an ultimatum for a 30-day ceasefire. Although he offered direct talks with Ukraine, the Russian dictator rejected an immediate ceasefire and reiterated his demand to address the “root causes” of the war.

As the author of the publication notes, “translated from the Kremlin,” this statement means that Putin demands at least the removal of the pro-Western government in Kyiv and Ukraine’s rejection of its NATO course. It is also possible that Putin may mean Ukraine’s rejection of Crimea and four continental regions that Russia does not fully control yet.

The journalist also doubts that Putin is truly afraid of new Western sanctions, since Russia is already the most sanctioned country in the world, but this has not had a significant impact on the standard of living in Moscow and St. Petersburg. At least not enough to force Putin to end the war, “which he considers his historic mission.”

“And so the Kremlin repeats its demands week after week, sometimes worded differently, but without fundamentally changing its insistence that the only way to peace is for Ukraine to give Russia everything it wants,” The Times journalist summarizes.

Ultimatum for a 30-day truce

As UNIAN reported, yesterday the Ukrainian president issued an ultimatum to Russia , which, according to him, was supported by the United States and Ukraine’s European partners. According to the ultimatum, starting Monday, Ukraine will unilaterally begin a 30-day unconditional and comprehensive ceasefire, and Russia must support it. If Russia refuses, additional sanctions will be imposed on it.

Late at night, the Russian dictator personally made a statement to the media in which he responded to the joint ultimatum of Ukraine and the West. He accused Ukraine of violating the “Easter” and “parade” ceasefires, declared unilaterally by Russia without coordination with Kiev. At the same time, he did not mention the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire at all, but proposed to start direct peace negotiations with Ukraine as early as May 15.

Later, the Russian Foreign Ministry clarified that the Kremlin first wants negotiations on a final peace , and only then a ceasefire.

And Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov added that the negotiations should be based on the achievements of 2022 (when the Russian Federation actually demanded Ukraine’s surrender) and “realities on the ground” (i.e., recognition of the territories occupied by the Russian Federation).

  1. If putler was so confident about winning this war, he wouldn’t have rushed to a press conference at 1.30am. Don’t believe the BS about sanctions not working, they are working. mafia land is over the edge of the cliff, and crashing to the bottom.

  2. So, the rat is playing for time and trying to look like the guy with all the cards. His stagnating war, the continuous high losses, and cancerous economy paint a different picture.

    • Yeah, and Trump is once again falling for it. Even Kellogg has said no talks until a ceasefire is in operation.

    • Krasnov reverting to type : making impossible pro-putler demands that he Zel knows cannot accept.
He’s teeing himself up for another aid block.

  3. “He accused Ukraine of violating the “Easter” and “parade” ceasefires, declared unilaterally by Russia without coordination with Kiev. ”

Ukraine violated nothing, unlike russia that violated its own ceasefire.
