Vladimir Putin has ordered a 36-hour Christmas ceasefire in Ukraine in what could be the first pause to fighting since he invaded, though the proposal has been met with a frosty reception from Ukraine.
The Kremlin said in a statement the ceasefire should start at noon on Friday and end at the end of the day on Saturday for Orthodox Christians living in the war zone.
However, the proposal appears to have been dismissed by Ukraine, with an advisor to President Volodymyr Zelensky saying there would only be a truce when Russia leaves the country.
Posting on Twitter, Mykhailo Podolyak said: “First. Ukraine doesn’t attack foreign territory & doesn’t kill civilians. As RF does. Ukraine destroys only members of the occupation army on its territory… Second. RF must leave the occupied territories – only then will it have a “temporary truce”. Keep hypocrisy to yourself.”

The Kremlin said in a statement: “We are calling on Ukraine to declare a ceasefire so that (Orthodox Christians) could go to church on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day.”
