Putin nationalizes one of the largest gold producers

The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation has appealed to the court with a demand to transfer to the state the assets of the Yuzhuralzoloto holding, controlled by the Russian billionaire, Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the Chelyabinsk Region from United Russia, Konstantin Strukov.

The lawsuit concerns the seizure in favor of the state of a number of assets related to the billionaire, which are registered in the name of his daughter, a Swiss citizen, and trusted persons, reports the Russian Interfax.

The Russian prosecutor’s office, during an inspection, allegedly only recently found out that Strukov gained control over Yuzhuralzoloto OJSC in 1997, when he was appointed director of this company, created on the basis of the state-owned enterprise Yuzhuralzoloto.

Yuzhuralzoloto is the third largest gold producer in Russia. The company’s assets include deposits in the Chelyabinsk region, Khakassia, and Krasnoyarsk Krai.

In 2024, it produced 10.6 tons of gold, with revenue of 25 billion rubles. At the same time, the company suffered a net loss of 7.2 billion rubles.

Strukov himself ranks 78th on the Russian Forbes list with a fortune estimated at $1.9 billion.

The day before, on July 2, officers from the regional departments of the FSB and the Investigative Committee in the Chelyabinsk region came to search the offices of Yuzhuralzolot, as well as Strukov himself.
