Putin influenced US position on ceasefire ahead of Zelenskyy’s meeting with Trump – The Times

Russian President Vladimir Putin had a phone conversation with Donald Trump a few hours before the American leader’s meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, trying to disrupt the ceasefire agreements in Ukraine.

This is reported by The Times, reports Censor.NET .

As the publication notes, a similar situation has happened before. In October, Zelenskyy was counting on Trump’s consent to sell Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, but after a call from Putin, the American president refused to take this step.

According to information, before the current meeting at Mar-a-Lago, Putin called Trump again, trying to prevent the ceasefire agreement , for which Zelensky arrived in the United States.

The publication writes that the Ukrainian president was ready to compromise and for the first time allowed the possibility of territorial concessions in Donbas on the condition of a 60-day ceasefire to hold a referendum on the peace agreement.

After Putin’s conversation with Trump, the Kremlin said the American president had allegedly rejected the proposal. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov explained this by saying that a ceasefire could lead to “prolonging the war .”

The Times notes that the Kremlin’s position coincides with subsequent public statements by Trump. After meeting with Zelensky, he confirmed that he understood Putin’s arguments against a ceasefire and believed that a halt to hostilities could lead to their resumption.
