Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said that US national security now depends on American determination to support Ukraine. According to him, Russian leader Vladimir Putin hopes that Western partners will abandon Kyiv.
“Our security in these turbulent times depends on American resolve. Putin is betting that the United States will falter, abandon our friends and leave Ukraine in mortal danger. If the Kremlin prevails in Ukraine, it will embolden potential aggressors around the world, and the United States The states will be much less secure if Putin wins in Ukraine,” he said at a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee, according to the US Department of Defense website.
Austin stressed that American inaction would put the free world at risk and create the risk of “unimaginable costs and dangers.” As the minister explained, China and other countries are monitoring the situation around Ukraine, Russia’s actions and the US reaction.
He noted that the Armed Forces of Ukraine, despite the advantage of the Russian Federation in human and material resources, did a “remarkable job” – they were able to recapture about 50% of the territory captured by the invaders at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Austin said Ukraine is not asking partners to fight for it, but is only asking for funds to support its own efforts.
“Without security assistance, they will not be able to replenish the desperately needed air defense systems they need to protect their people, and their other defensive capabilities will atrophy,” the Pentagon chief concluded.
