Putin has not been able to forget the humiliation of the collapse of the USSR and wants revenge – CNN

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin wants to establish a new world order in which Russia plays a central role. He and several of his closest associates are descendants of the KGB remnants, all of whom have never forgotten the humiliation of the collapse of the Soviet Union and are unhappy with how the world has changed since then.

This is stated in a CNN article . They recalled that Putin does not hide that, in his opinion, Ukraine should not exist as an independent state, and NATO should be reduced to the size of the Cold War.

When the USSR collapsed, the Russian economy collapsed and had to be bailed out by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank – another humiliation for the former superpower. But when Putin came to power, Russia became richer than ever thanks to the steady rise in oil prices. Russia had a voice, and was invited to join the group of the world’s largest economies – the G7, renamed the G8 after it joined.

Christine Berzina, managing director of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, said that this was not enough for Putin and he rejected these achievements on behalf of his citizens for higher geopolitical goals. She said that being “eighth in the G7” was never good enough for Russia.

“This does not correspond to Russia’s understanding of its own exceptionalism. It is the largest country in the world, the richest in natural resources, so how can it be just one of the players?” Berzina explained.

War in Ukraine

US President Donald Trump wants the war in Ukraine to end as quickly as possible, even if it means further territorial losses for Kyiv. This means that Putin has little to lose from negotiations.

Russia is making some incremental gains now, but it is certainly not winning. However, that could change if the US stops supplying weapons and intelligence to Ukraine.

“Putin went into Ukraine thinking it would be an easy and quick operation. Three years later, he controls 20% of Ukraine, but at a terrible, terrible price. So, essentially, the Russians lose. But the point is, the Ukrainians lose faster,” said leading Russia analyst Mark Galeotti.

According to him, for Putin and his entourage, Trump’s insistence on a ceasefire simply provides an opportunity to gain quick victories without forgetting about long-term goals.

“Putin is an opportunist. He likes to create dynamic, chaotic situations that open up a lot of possibilities. And then he can just pick which opportunity appeals to him, and he can change his mind,” Galeotti believes.

Putin’s long-term plan

Putin and his entourage have not abandoned their long-term goals regarding Ukraine. They believe that the “root causes” of the conflict are Ukrainian sovereignty, democratically elected President Volodymyr Zelensky, and NATO’s eastward expansion.

By launching a full-scale invasion in 2022, the dictator sought to change the government in Kyiv and turn Ukraine into a vassal state. Russia has not achieved this militarily, but it may try other methods, including interfering in elections. This is probably what Moscow will try to do after the ceasefire, Berzina believes.

That is why Russia continues to question Zelensky’s legitimacy and insist on elections in Ukraine. Trump, to the delight of the Kremlin, supported this narrative, calling the Ukrainian president a “dictator without elections.”

Washington has also dismissed the idea that Ukraine could join NATO anytime soon. Meanwhile, Europe is distrustful of Putin and his promises to stop fighting if Ukraine becomes, as he calls it, neutral.

Europe is aware of the threat of future Russian military aggression. “Could Russia have a desire to try its hand at military action again? Of course, and that is why Europeans are very clearly aware of the risk of future military intervention,” Berzina said.

Conflict with the West

According to Russian investigative journalist Andrei Soldatov, who lives in London, for the Kremlin this is not a war with Ukraine, it is a war with the West.

“They really believe that the West has been striving for the complete destruction and subjugation of Russia for centuries. This is not just propaganda, they really believe it,” he said.

And Putin framed his plan for Ukraine within his own interpretation of history, which goes far beyond the collapse of the Soviet Union. The dictator often argued that Ukraine was not a real country, since it and Ukrainians were part of a larger “historical Russia.”

“After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia lost touch with its ancient Orthodox lands, and I think part of Putin’s project is to try to bring back that thread that connects 10th-century Rus’ to that purely Orthodox continuity,” said Monica White, associate professor of Russian and Slavic studies at the University of Nottingham.

She suggests that Putin seeks to return Russia to the world stage with a bang, driving a wedge between Europe and the United States and uniting with other opponents of the West.

As OBOZ.UA reported, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has successfully flattered and manipulated US presidents throughout his 26-year political career . The first such attempts at influence began when he was an unknown official.

  1. So, the dwarf can’t handle the humiliation of russia’s failure as an empire, but must now face another humiliation of russia failing at being mafia land … and not to mention the humiliation of having his army reduced to ashes by a much smaller country.

  2. “The fundamental factors that contributed to collapse of the USSR, including economic stagnation and the overextension of the military, were rooted in Soviet policies”

So Putler is going down the same route as the USSR, with the same predictable outcome. Except mafia land is nowhere near as strong as the USSR, and thanks to Ukraine, it’s military is weakened beyond recognition.

    • I think even the orange pervert in the White House can help the shithole’s eventual collapse. The US is too deeply indebted and it will get only worse with him. Maybe we’ll see both nations collapse. Trump can hold putler’s hands as they walk into the sunset of history.

    • It’s a shame that we haven’t had presidents with brains a foresight for a long time.
