Russian dictator vladimir putin is suffering colossal losses in exchange for minor territorial gains in the war his country is waging against Ukraine.
Because of this, as former British Army colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon writes in a column for The Telegraph, the Kremlin will once again resort to terrorizing the civilian population of Ukraine, as this is the only way it can guarantee sustained success.
In his analysis, Gordon cited figures announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding the enemy army’s losses on the front lines – more than 10,000 occupiers each week. This makes it clear that russia’s manpower for combat operations is running out, and there are virtually no sources for recruiting new troops.
“Theoretically, putin could simply announce a mobilization, which would lead to a significant increase in troop numbers. But the Kremlin understands that another large-scale mobilization, which could potentially affect hundreds of thousands of russians, could have explosive political consequences,” the author writes.
Therefore, according to the British colonel, Moscow will continue to employ its familiar tactic: since it is unable to make headway on the front lines, it must persistently put pressure on ordinary citizens, leaving them without electricity, heat, and other benefits of civilization during the winter. As a result, sooner or later, Ukrainians will begin demanding that their government make concessions and end the war.
Although this strategy did not work in Syria and has not worked in Ukraine for five years in a row, putin is maniacally convinced of its effectiveness. And this, according to the author, is not the behavior of someone who wants to end this senseless war, but rather – on the contrary – to prolong it for as long as possible.
As a reminder, back in September, Zelenskyy reported that russia had lost 270,000 troops over the course of a year in order to occupy 100 km² of Ukrainian territory.
