Roman Sheremeta, Ph.D., is a Professor of Economics and Chair of the Economics Department at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University. He is also the Founding Rector of American University Kyiv, which he helped establish in 2022.
He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Purdue University and has received numerous research and teaching accolades, including the 2018 Smith Ascending Scholar Prize for a “budding genius” in social science.
Sheremeta was recognized as a Top Economic Thinker of Ukrainian Descent by Forbes in 2015, ranked among the top young economists globally by IDEAS in 2018, and named one of the Best 40 Under 40 Professors by Poets & Quants in 2019.
Since russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he has been actively engaged in delivering humanitarian aid and advancing initiatives to support the country’s recovery and reconstruction, including his service on the National Recovery Council, an advisory body to the President of Ukraine.
He is a fellow at the Centre for Eastern European Democracy and a board member of Save Ukraine and Ukrainian American House, organizations dedicated to returning abducted Ukrainian children and supporting the Ukrainian people.
Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder has been spotted in Moscow.
At this point, nobody should be surprised.
For years, Schröder served as one of Putin’s most valuable assets in the West. While millions of Europeans believed they were building peace through economic cooperation, the Kremlin was building leverage, influence, and dependency.
The result was catastrophic. Germany became dependent on russian energy, and Europe helped Putin grow his war machine.
Ukraine repeatedly warned that Nord Stream was not an economic project but a geopolitical weapon. Those warnings were ignored.
Today, after hundreds of thousands of casualties, destroyed cities, abducted children, and countless war crimes, Schröder is back in Moscow.
History should remember that Putin did not build his influence in Europe alone. He had help: politicians, executives, lobbyists, and intellectuals who convinced themselves that profit was more important than principles.

Schröder is a warning about influence without a spy badge. Moscow used energy, access, money, and flattery to shape European choices for years. That kind of leverage can weaken an alliance before a war even starts!

According to an investigation by Hungarian outlet Telex, Viktor Orbán personally ordered the raid on Ukraine’s Oschadbank cash-in-transit officers.
The assets were eventually returned. The deportation orders were revoked. The Schengen entry bans were lifted.
That raises an obvious question: If a crime had actually been committed, why return everything and cancel every punishment? If the reporting is accurate, this was not law enforcement. It was the abuse of state power for political retaliation.
Europe cannot condemn authoritarianism in Moscow while tolerating it in Budapest.

Ukrainian drones have struck Putin’s hometown of St. Petersburg.
One of the targets was the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal, one of russia’s largest seaports for handling petroleum products in the Baltic region.
The attack comes on the opening day of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, where Putin is scheduled to speak.
