Despite his peacekeeping ambitions, US President Donald Trump acted as a passive observer in the situation with the Russian drone strike on Poland, writes The New York Times .

The publication noted that the head of the White House did not make any harsh statements regarding the invasion of Russian drones into Poland, but limited himself to a strange statement on social media.

“What is this violation of Polish airspace by Russia using drones? It has begun!” he wrote a few hours after enemy targets were shot down over its territory for the first time since NATO’s creation.

The publication writes that this became an example of how Trump, who until now had convinced everyone that only he could achieve peace in both Ukraine and the Middle East, this time limited himself to the role of an observer.Read also:

“It’s a strange juxtaposition: he openly seeks the Nobel Peace Prize for his interventions in six – sometimes he says seven or even more – conflicts in the world. At the same time, he says there’s little he can do about it,” the article says.

As for Trump’s reaction to the Russian drone raid on NATO territory, the article calls it “the strangest”: he shrugs his shoulders, as if to say “what can you do?” While throughout the years of the full-scale war in Ukraine, Washington has been repeating that the Alliance will “defend every inch” of its territory.

Meanwhile, it is noted that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has every reason to cross “red lines,” because nothing that Trump promised after meeting with him in Alaska, including direct negotiations between the presidents of Ukraine and Russia and new sanctions against Russia, has happened.

The publication quoted a European diplomat as saying that “Putin is not particularly sensitive to statements by NATO or its European members,” while the actions of the United States – the nuclear superpower that is the center of the Alliance – are not indifferent to him.

Meanwhile, the latest signals from the US have been that Europeans are increasingly taking responsibility for their own defense. Just last week, the publication recalled, the Trump administration announced the end of a training program for advanced European nations, mainly in the Baltic states. This move was presented as a cost-saving solution.

The Russians likely interpreted this as another sign that the Americans were leaving the defense of Europe to the Europeans and that it was time to test those defenses, the NYT summarizes.

Trump’s reaction to the drone attack on Poland

As UNIAN previously reported, Trump ignored the question about Russian drones over Poland. When journalists in Washington asked him if he knew about the violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones, the US president waved to the press and, under a barrage of questions about Russia, walked to his car, accompanied by bodyguards.

He later posted his reaction  to the Russian “Shaheed” attack on Poland on the social network. “What kind of violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones is this? It has begun!” – the head of the White House noted.
