US officials were scrambling to find and book a place where US President Donald Trump could meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, August 15. They faced a problem because summer is peak tourist season in Alaska and options for the two leaders to meet were limited, CNN reports .
It is stated that the summit organizers, after reviewing all the options, came to the conclusion that the only city in the state of Alaska that has acceptable options for hosting the summit is Anchorage.
It is noted that only Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, located on the northern outskirts of the city, met the requirements for hosting the historic meeting.
Although, as the publication points out, the White House hoped to avoid a public reception of the Russian leader and his entourage on the territory of a US military base.
Two White House officials told the publication that this is the location where the first meeting between the leaders of the United States and Russia in the last four years will take place.
It is indicated that preparations for the summit are still ongoing; on Tuesday, August 12, a conversation took place between the heads of the diplomatic departments of the two countries – Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to discuss “certain aspects of preparations.”
