Moscow and Washington seem to be uninterested in the opinions of not only Kyiv, but also the rest of Europe.
US President Donald Trump’s chummy conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin , which took place without Ukraine and Europe, may indicate that the two are ready to once again divide the world into spheres of influence. And Ukraine will follow the fate of Germany, divided into two parts – a free democratic one and a totalitarian one occupied by the Russians. This is what CNN analyst Stephen Collinson writes .

He noted how Trump responded to a reporter’s question about whether Ukraine would be an equal partner in peace talks. After thinking for a moment, he said, “That’s an interesting question. I said it was not a good war to get into.” Trump, Collinson said, may have bought into Putin’s narrative that the war is the fault of the one who was brutally invaded by an authoritarian neighbor.
Trump and his subordinates also repeat the thesis that Ukraine cannot return to its pre-war borders and that it should not become a NATO member. The analyst notes that Trump has thereby neutralized one of the negotiating trump cards that could have played in Ukraine’s favor during the bargaining in the negotiating room.
“Wednesday was Putin’s best day since the invasion, as it swept away many of Ukraine’s aspirations,” Collinson writes.
The analyst suggests that Trump does not object to Russia’s intention to retain the already occupied territories of Ukraine.
“Now America, like Russia, has a president who believes that great powers have the right to expansionism in their regional spheres of influence,” the journalist emphasizes.
Collinson suggests that Trump is throwing out not only Ukraine but also Europe from the negotiating process, as indicated by his intention to meet with Putin
“To the European ear, it sounds like Munich. It sounds like two great leaders wanting peace in our time (at the expense of) a distant country they know little about. They are preparing to make a deal over the heads of this particular country. Many Europeans know how this movie ended,” said former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt.

I don’t know if anything is true but this is a case of yellow journalism raising issues that no one knows. It once again makes CNN and other cable news outfits untrustworthy and irrelevant. These so called journalist just don’t get. They’re as stupid as Trump
It’s an analysis based on what people have actually said. trumpkov’s defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, *has* said that a return to Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders is “an unrealistic objective” and an “illusionary goal”.
If you want to read the original CNN analysis rather than Unian’s summary of it, you can find it here:
https://www.cnn.com/2025/02/13/politics/us-european-relations-trump-putin-analysis/index.html
No sir. It’s analysis of picked apart statements put together by nefarious idiots more interested in viewership rather the facts. It’s complete bullshit and sir if you’re defending this bullshit you’re as bad as the authors.
I don’t know if you read Stephen Collinson’s original article. I posted the link because I think it’s better to go to the source than to bash CNN based on someone else’s summary. For example, the headline “Putin and Trump decided to divide the world into spheres of influence, starting with Ukraine” is not from the CNN article.
The only mention of “influence” in the CNN article is:
“Trump seems to have no objection to Russia retaining the spoils of its unprovoked invasion. This is not surprising — since like Russia, America now has a president who believes great powers are entitled to expansionism in their regional areas of influence.”
To me, that seems like an accurate analysis. trumpkov has said that it was unlikely Ukraine would return to its pre-2014 borders. And we’ve all read about his expansionist desires – taking over Greenland, Canada, and the Panama Canal.
