Senior German officials have accused the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party of deliberately abusing its parliamentary powers to gather and pass on classified information about the country’s military capabilities to the Kremlin, Spiegel reports .
It was noted that AfD members systematically submitted numerous parliamentary inquiries to the German government regarding details of military transport, counter-drone measures, cyber defense, and the vulnerability of critical infrastructure. According to the publication, this information may have been passed on to Russia.
Thuringia’s Interior Minister, Georg Meier, stated that AfD officials are “abusing their parliamentary right to inquire.” He believes the party’s actions are clearly carrying out Kremlin orders.
Thomas Röwekamp, Chairman of the Bundestag’s Defense Committee, agreed with Meyer’s position. Speaking to reporters, he said that AfD members were submitting suspiciously detailed inquiries about the Bundeswehr’s military capabilities and its weaknesses.
Rövekamp emphasized that this level of data detail “cannot be explained by ordinary parliamentary oversight.” He believes it may indicate the collection of sensitive information for foreign countries, primarily Russia.
The publication’s sources in the Federal Ministry of Defense reported that German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius also shares these suspicions. Furthermore, the German Ministry of Defense suspects that the AfD’s requests may be coordinated.Read also:
