Presidential elections in Romania: Gheorghe Simion, who has been declared persona non grata in Ukraine, leads in the first round

Romania  is holding a repeat presidential election on Sunday, May 4. The current front-runner is Gheorghe Simion, leader of the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians party.

This was reported by the Romanian service of Radio Liberty, Censor.NET informs .

Polling stations opened at 7:00 a.m. and closed at 9:00 p.m. local time (coincides with Kyiv time). Romanians abroad could vote from Friday, May 2.

According to the published exit poll results, the presidential candidates received the following results:

  • George Simeon (AUR) – 33.1%;
  • Crin Antonescu – 22.9%;
  • Nikushor Dan – 20.9%;
  • Viktor Ponta – 14.7%.

Eleven candidates are running for president. Four of them are independents, and seven are supported by parties or coalitions.

It is predicted that no candidate will receive more than 50% of the vote, which means a second round of elections will be held on May 18.

By the way, the leader of the first round of elections, Gheorghe Simion, has been declared persona non grata in Ukraine and Moldova.

Elections in Romania

As a reminder, the first round of presidential elections took place in Romania on November 24, 2024. There were 14 candidates on the ballot.

Calin Georgescu (22.95%) and Elena Lasconi (19.17%) advanced to the second round, which will be held on December 8.

The country’s Supreme Security Council reported that Romania was the target of “aggressive Russian hybrid attacks” during the country’s presidential election.
