Leo XIV’s predecessor, Pope Francis, had a more restrained position.

The new Pope, Robert Prevost , who chose the name Leo XIV, spoke out about Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The American pontiff made the corresponding statement in an interview with the Peruvian Semanario Expresión. He condemned Russian aggression.

The Pope described the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine as “a real invasion, imperialist in nature, where Russia seeks to conquer territory for reasons of power.”

It is worth noting that Leo XIV’s predecessor, Pope Francis, had a more restrained position on the Russo-Ukrainian war. Many of his statements in this context did not distinguish between the victim and the aggressor. His words that Russians and Ukrainians are “brothers” also attracted criticism.

Pope Leo XIV

On May 8, a conclave in the Vatican elected a new Pope. He was Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost , who took the name Leo XIV.

It is known that Prevost is the first American in history to become Pope. He was born in Chicago, is fluent in several languages: Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese, and English. The pontiff also reads in Latin and German.

Reuters writes that the papacy of Leo XIV will be different from that of his predecessor, Pope Francis.
