The NATO Parliamentary Assembly called on the governments of NATO member countries to give permission to Ukraine to strike legitimate military targets on the territory of the Russian Federation with Western weapons .

People’s deputy, head of the permanent delegation of Ukraine in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Yehor Chernev told about this on the air of the telethon . This collective decision gives the parliamentarians of the member countries of the Alliance a tool to put pressure on their governments on this issue.

“We inserted these amendments. They were supported by the majority, but not all delegation members. A vote was taken. Finally, we have a text that calls on the governments of NATO member countries to give Ukraine permission to strike legitimate military targets on the territory of the Russian Federation,” Chernev emphasized .

The head of the permanent delegation of Ukraine to the NATO PA said that there was a certain confrontation with the Italian delegation, which spoke against the inclusion of this very point in the declaration on Ukraine. But, according to the results, the Ukrainian delegation managed to convince them, mobilizing support from France, the Netherlands, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden and others. The decision was also supported by the USA and Great Britain.

“After all, Italy voted for the final decision, not only for this amendment, but also for the entire document regarding the declaration on Ukraine. Hungary, as expected, did not vote, as well as one of the members of the German delegation from the Alternative for Germany party.” All other countries supported this decision and this declaration,” Chernev emphasized.

He noted that from now on, parliamentarians of NATO member countries will have legal grounds, relatively speaking, a tool to pressure their governments to allow Ukraine to use Western weapons for military purposes on the territory of the Russian Federation.

“This is a collective decision of representatives of the parliaments of NATO member countries, who, unfortunately, cannot independently make such decisions about granting permission. But now they can initiate internal documents and turn to their governments in order to grant such permission,” Chernev explained .

The deputy summarized that in most Western countries, the executive power and country leaders are responsible for defense.

“Let’s put it this way, we helped the parliaments to have a tool to put pressure on the governments, but the final decision always rests with the leaders of the countries regarding defense issues,” Chernev stated.
