Operation Red Wedding: How the Elimination of Iran’s Military Leadership Was Planned

18.06.25

In late November 2024, the Defense Ministry decided to develop a plan for a large-scale operation against Iran with the aim of seriously damaging its nuclear program. As part of Operation Red Wedding, the Israeli Air Force managed to eliminate key figures in Iran’s military leadership within 12 minutes.

While the IDF was fighting Hezbollah in Lebanon, senior military intelligence and air force officers gathered in a central Israeli hotel for about ten hours to identify strategic enemy centers that the IDF could strike to cause maximum damage. The targets included senior General Staff officials , air defense systems, missile and UAV storage sites, launch systems, and nuclear centers.

After the first meeting, a workshop was held at Unit 8200 headquarters with 120 officers ranging from lieutenant colonel to brigadier general to analyze the intelligence and develop a plan of action. The best minds in military intelligence and the Air Force were trying to figure out how to break through Iran’s defenses and strike at critical centers. Three months passed, and there was still no viable solution or clear plan.

Beginning in February, the military reconvened and decided that the operation would need to be multitasking. By March, the plan was ready. It was called the Red Wedding, named after one of the most memorable and dramatic episodes of Game of Thrones.

The secret plan was to establish a 1,500 km safe air corridor and attack senior Iranian military leaders. The IDF leadership said the plan was on the verge of fantasy. In the end, intelligence and the Air Force were able to eliminate ten senior Iranian military leaders in 12 minutes.

According to sources, more than 200 fighter jets attacked more than 100 targets across Iran. Each squadron, depending on the area of operations, was given the coordinates of Iranian generals who needed to be eliminated. Some of the members of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces were sleeping at home, some were in the headquarters, some were elsewhere. Intelligence knew the location of a number of generals. The locations were passed on to the Air Force and the plan, as we know, worked.

Within the first hours, it became clear that the three most senior military commanders of the Iranian regime had been eliminated: the regime’s chief of staff, Mohammad Hossein Baqeri; the commander of the IRGC, Hossein Salami ; and the head of the central staff, Hatem-Ghalam Ali Rashid. Over time, the list of killed generals grew.

As the first hours of the war showed, the Iranian headquarters were disoriented, and there was no one to command defensive actions.

As reported by Detali, more than 20 Iranian commanders were killed in  the preemptive strike on Iran , including the head of the armed forces’ intelligence department and the commander of the IRGC unit that operated surface-to-surface missiles.

  1. We can safely say that the Ukrainian and Israeli special ops are on an equal level. They both can achieve incredible and highly effective tasks.

Wow – a two week delay. I did not see that coming (said absolutely nobody).
