Scholz promised additional arms supplies worth 650 million euros.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in Kyiv on a surprise visit on Monday morning, writes Spiegel .

Scholz said upon his arrival that he wanted to express his solidarity with Ukraine with his visit. He assured that Germany “will remain Ukraine’s strongest supporter in Europe” and promised additional arms supplies. 

“At a meeting with President Zelensky, I will announce additional weapons worth 650 million euros, which are to be delivered in December,” the chancellor said, adding that Ukraine can rely on Germany.

“We say what we do. And we do what we say,” he said.

This is not Scholz’s first visit to Ukraine. In June 2022, he visited Kyiv together with the leaders of Romania, France and Italy.

Let us recall that Ukraine has long been asking Germany for long-range Taurus missiles. Some German politicians support such assistance, but Olaf Scholz is categorically against it . He is afraid that this will provoke an escalation and that Ukraine will strike at the Kremlin.

Also on November 15, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time in two years. This call was criticized by both Volodymyr Zelensky and many of Ukraine’s partners .
