Explosions were heard in Saratov, Russia, on May 31. The city was attacked by drones, and a fire broke out near the local refinery.
Damage was recorded in several places at the plant. Details, as well as photos and videos from the scene, were collected on the Exilenova+ Telegram channel.
Saratov refinery attacked
The UAV attack on Saratov became known at night.
“Saratov, reports of a UAV attack, explosions heard in the city,” Exilenova+ noted, publishing a short video showing the fire.
Soon, Exilenova+ clarified: the fire broke out at the local refinery.
“Ukrainian troops attacked the Saratov Oil Refinery. Footage shared by residents shows a fire at the facility. Preliminary reports indicate that the fire may have started in the area of the isomerization unit. POV: 51.49383423473482, 45.942469558755285,” the OSINT community world.militares noted.
Judging by the footage taken by eyewitnesses, there are more than two fire centers on the territory of the refinery.
According to Falcon Insight analysis, it landed in several areas of the refinery at once. Researchers record damage :
- Catalytic reforming units LCh-35-11/600 51°27’30.00″N 45°56’15.13″E
- ЕЛОУ-АВТ-6 installations 51°27’24.38″N 45°56’12.93″E
- Visbraking installations 51°27’21.08″N 45°56’12.39″E
- Catalytic reforming units L-35-11/300 51°27’30.59″N 45°56’26.31″E
- Pentane-hexane fraction isomerization units 51°27’24.57″N 45°56’26.47″E
“It is likely that the installation that suffered the most severe (critical) damage is ELOU-AVT-6,” the report states.
What is known about the Saratov Refinery?
Saratov Oil Refinery (controlled by Rosneft) is one of the oldest oil refineries in the Russian Federation. As of 2023, the volume of oil refining was 4.8 million tons, with a total capacity of about 5.8 million tons of oil per year.
The enterprise produces over 20 types of products, including unleaded gasoline, diesel fuel, fuel oil of all major brands, bitumen, vacuum gas oil, and technical sulfur.
The Saratov Refinery is involved in meeting the needs of the Russian Armed Forces: it is one of the main suppliers of fuel and lubricants for the Russian army. Diesel fuel and gasoline from this enterprise directly go to the needs of armored vehicles and logistics transport.
The Saratov Oil Refinery has been visited by Ukrainian drones on several occasions.
Thus, on August 10, 2025, as a result of a drone attack, the technical structures of the “ELOU-AVT-6” installation, as well as the pipeline connecting the plant’s installations, were significantly damaged.
It also flew on September 16 and 20, October 16, November 3, 11, 14, and 28, December 12, 2025, and March 12, 2026.
As OBOZ.UA reported, Ukrainian drones also attacked an oil depot in Matveyevo Kurgan that night. The fire that broke out at the facility was visible from afar.
According to Reuters, diesel production in Russia fell by another 10% in May after Ukrainian drone attacks.
