Berlin is in talks with Washington.
The German government has urged the US Senate not to approve a defense budget, which imposes sanctions on companies involved in the construction of the Nord Stream-2 pipeline. This was stated by the head of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gaiko Maas, reports the German edition Handelsblatt .
Maas said that imposing sanctions on the gas pipeline was unacceptable because “it is an attempt to influence Europe’s autonomous decisions.”
He added that Berlin is currently negotiating with Washington on the issue.
On December 11, the US House of Representatives approved a $ 738 billion defense bill, including $ 300 million in military assistance to Ukraine and sanctions against Russian gas companies. The budget was supported by 377 congressmen against 48. US President Donald Trump has promised not to delay the signing of the project.

Asking the US not to approve their defence budget, is also an attempt to influence autonomous decisions. You made your bed, now lie in it. The EU had a choice, the US and democracy, or Russia and terrorism, you chose the latter, good luck, you’ll need it.

These sanctions are aimed at Russia, not Europe, to prevent Russia from cutting off all gas to Ukraine. But one is never too stupid to be a prussian…
Yeah but also the US also want to export gas to Europe, I think that is the main reason. I very much doubt the US are going to sanction Nord Stream just because of Ukraine.
Not sure. The US policy has always been that US oil and gas will not be exported to be able to keep the prices stable when imported oil/gas become more expensive.
Well the senate vote next week, then it’s up to Trump. He said he will sign it immediately, be a nice Christmas present for Putin from the US.
There are many good reasons for sanctions against Nord stream and the export of American LNG certainly plays a part .
I disagree that this is the main reason . Russia is looking to use cheap gas as a way to monopolize the European energy market, threatening stability in the region. The US cannot simply look the other way while the Kremlin builds this Trojan horse let alone the fact that it would fund Putin’s future acts of aggression.
Trump unfortunately prefers a soft economic war against Muskovy. He brags during his rallies that the US bumped Muskovy down to #3 in exports. Yes, its too bad the main reason doesn’t seem to be this political stunt to bypass Ukraine. Still, the Germans have been warned for years that Ukraine, the Baltics and Poland have been against this political weapon against Ukraine. The only way to get the German’s attention is to stop the IV of their addiction.
