North Korea has sent Deputy Chief Kim Yong Bok and thousands of troops to Russia, likely seeking modern combat experience and drone technology rather than commanding forces in Ukraine.

North Korea has sent Deputy Chief of the General Staff Kim Yong Bok, along with 11,000-12,000 soldiers, to Russia, though his role is unlikely to involve leading these troops. According to South Korea’s national intelligence, Kim, a close associate of leader Kim Jong Un, has significant influence.
Korean media suggests Kim may head North Korea’s participation in Russia’s war against Ukraine. Notably, in 2016, he commanded the 11th Storm Corps, now forming the core of North Korea’s special forces, making him familiar with the units deployed in Russia. However, his rank as Colonel-General typically oversees smaller forces, and it’s doubtful North Korean generals will command, as their troops are likely to serve as expendable assets.
Kim’s primary objective may be to gain operational insights from Russia on modern warfare to refine North Korea’s military strategies and tactics against South Korea. Pyongyang values this knowledge, as its military functions in isolation. North Korea may adopt Russia’s artillery-centric, low-mechanization warfare approach, which aligns with its own limitations. Another critical focus for North Korea is acquiring Russian drone technology and tactics for reconnaissance and strikes.
We already know the West’s deep concern and how they’re monitoring the situation of this cooperation, but how far will S. Korea let this shit show progress?
