The US Secretary of State added that Ukraine and Russia are closer to a peace agreement than they have been in the past three years.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the next week will be crucial in ending the war in Ukraine. He also noted on NBC News that there are some reasons for optimism.

“I think this is going to be a very important week (next week – UNIAN). This week is going to be a really important week, where we have to make a decision about whether we want to continue to do this thing (ending the war – UNIAN), or whether it’s time to focus on some other issues that are in some cases no less, if not more important. But we want this to happen,” Rubio said.

The US Secretary of State added that Ukraine and Russia are closer to a peace agreement than they have been in the past three years. According to him, a peace agreement should be concluded in the near future.

However, Rubio stressed that “we need to remain realistic” about ending the war.

“We are close, but not close enough,” Rubio said.

The US Secretary of State noted that peace agreements “must be based not on trust, but on facts and guarantees.”
