Additional support for Ukraine and other activities are also being considered.

The foreign ministers of the G7 countries (Canada, the United States, Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Japan) have threatened the Russian Federation with new sanctions if it does not agree to a truce with Ukraine.

This is stated in a joint statement by the heads of the G7 foreign policy departments and the EU high representative following their meeting in Charlevoix (Quebec, Canada).

In particular, the top diplomats welcomed the ongoing efforts to achieve a ceasefire. They welcome Ukraine’s commitment to an immediate ceasefire, which is an important step towards a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in accordance with the UN Charter.

“We called on Russia to reciprocate by agreeing to a ceasefire on equal terms and fully implementing it,” the statement said.

In this regard, top diplomats discussed the possibility of using additional measures against Russia in the event that such a truce is not agreed upon. This includes new sanctions, restrictions on oil prices, as well as additional support for Ukraine and other measures.

“This includes the use of excess profits that come from immobilized Russian sovereign assets. We noted the importance of confidence-building measures in the context of the ceasefire, including the release of prisoners of war and hostages – both military and civilian – and the return of Ukrainian children,” the statement said.

At the same time, it is noted that any ceasefire must be observed

The G7 Ministers noted the need for robust and credible security mechanisms for Ukraine to ensure that Ukraine can deter and defend itself against any further aggressive actions.

The top diplomats added that they would continue to coordinate economic and humanitarian support to promote rapid recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine, including during the conference on Ukraine reconstruction, which will be held on July 10-11 in Rome.
