NATO’s secretary general does not think war in Ukraine will end with victory for either side

NATO’s Secretary General Mark Rutte believes that Russia’s war against Ukraine is unlikely to end with a victory for either side.

Source: Rutte in an interview for Bloomberg, as reported by Ukrainian Pravda.

Details: Rutte was asked whether anyone would win the war in Ukraine, which began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

“I don’t think that’s very likely,” he said.

“These kinds of wars always end in a peace deal, which is often a kind of compromise,” Rutte noted.

Rutte stressed that Europe must remain vigilant regarding the possibility of Russian aggression even after the war eventually ends.

“The Russian threat does not manifest directly at our border now, because a lot of those soldiers are busy in Ukraine,” he said.

“But if that’s finished, then their huge army won’t be there simply to be a huge army,” the NATO secretary general added.

Background:

  • Estonian Defence Minister Martin Herem said that he believes Russia will inevitably “test” another country regardless of how the Russia-Ukraine war ends.
  • Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he had spoken with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte about the security situation in Eastern Europe and battlefield developments in the Russia-Ukraine war.
  • On 28 August, Tusk said there are signs that Russia is seriously preparing for an escalation and suggested the next seven to eight months could be critical for the security of Ukraine, Poland and the region as a whole.
  • Meanwhile, Finnish President Alexander Stubb has expressed doubt about the possibility of Russia attacking “the most powerful military alliance in the world – NATO”.

  1. To defeat ruSSia Ukraine needs more than just striking refineries, Ukraine would have to retake all occupied territories. This is, according to Zaluzhny and other high-ranked military men no longer possible.

  2. Zelensky always argues he is ready for peace talks anytime. Then he adds he won’t make any territorial concessions. What a nonsense. And Ukrainians keep dying.

  3. Mike, Zelensky is representing his country, the people, it is not his personal decision. You may as well replace his name in your posts with “Ukrainians”.
