NATO tested a new system to counter KABs: when can the Armed Forces of Ukraine receive it?

06/20/2025

Ukraine, together with NATO, has tested new means of countering Russian guided aerial bombs, in particular KABs (FABs with UMPK control and planning modules). The testing took place within the framework of the NATO Innovation Challenge project, and partial deployment of the new multi-level air defense system is expected by the end of 2025.

This is not only about combating KABs, but also about protecting against other threats, such as Shahed strike UAVs. This is reported by Defense Express.

Three startups have joined the creation of the innovative air defense system: Alta Ares, Atreyd, and Tytan. Each company is responsible for its component in a comprehensive solution – from target detection to destruction. In particular:

  • Alta Ares (France) has developed a detection system capable of identifying and predicting the flight paths of gliding aerial bombs;
  • Atreyd (France) proposed a solution based on anti-aircraft drones and the concept of a swarm of kamikaze drones that forms an aerial “wall” to intercept bombs in flight;
  • Tytan (Germany) – a low-cost, NATO-compatible, field-tested subsonic interceptor.

The tests took place in difficult conditions at the training ground of the French defense procurement agency DGA with the participation of NATO’s Joint Command Transformation, the NATO Joint Training Center, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Over the course of several days, the latest technologies were tested: sensor systems, dynamic control technologies, control algorithms and drones that responded to simulated and real threats.

NATO’s press service said the review confirmed the effectiveness of the multi-layered approach to air defense. At the same time, participants are obliged to improve their solutions, and the most critical technical shortcomings should be eliminated in the coming weeks.

Some of the systems are being prepared for limited implementation this year, and full deployment is planned by the end of 2025. The Ukrainian side is actively involved in further tests and implementation of the project.

Russian glide bombs pose a great threat, as they allow enemy aircraft to strike Ukrainian positions without entering the air defense zone. New means can change the situation – reduce losses, increase the effectiveness of defense lines and save the lives of both military and civilians.

Currently, developers continue to work on optimizing systems to provide reliable cover from attacks that Russia is actively using on the front lines.

As OBOZ.UA reported, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin recently presented
the Russian Federation’s rearmament program for 2027-2036 . According to him, key attention in the coming years will be paid to the modernization and improvement of Russian air defense systems, space systems, drones, and robotics.

  1. What other best way to test this defense systems if not giving them to Ukraine??? They will be tested, improved and, on top of that, save lives!
