Russia has illegally seized control of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait, using the illegal Crimean Bridge as a gateway. Russia must dismantle the Crimean bridge. This was stated by the representative of Ukraine Anton Korynevich at the court in The Hague, APNews reports .
“Russia wants to take the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait, so it has built a huge gate at the entrance [to them] to keep out international vessels, while allowing small Russian river vessels to enter,” Korinevych said at the first meeting of the Permanent Arbitration on Monday.
This statement was made within the framework of consideration of the Ukrainian lawsuit from 2016. Ukraine accuses Russia of violating the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which manifested itself not only in the construction of the bridge, but also in the ban on Ukrainian fishermen from fishing in the Sea of Azov, environmental damage and looting of underwater archaeological sites.
“The bridge is illegal and should be demolished,” Korynevych insists.
Russia believes that the Permanent Chamber of the Arbitration Court in The Hague cannot consider this claim, as if it is not within its competence. But if the arbitrators decide that the lawsuit is within their competence, according to Russia, the court will definitely side with it.
“The accusations brought forward by Ukraine in this case are, of course, absolutely groundless and hopeless,” as it concerns the “internal waters” of Russia, said Russian representative Gennady Kuzmin.
Russia is trying to protect the Crimean bridge
