Most of the surveyed Odessa residents have a negative attitude towards Kateryna, a positive attitude towards Bandera and want to change the date of the city’s founding, – social research of the Institute of National Remembrance

The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance presented a new study on the attitude of Odessans to Catherine II, Alexander Pushkin, Stepan Bandera and other historical figures. 310 people took part in the survey.

Respondents were asked to characterize their attitude to  Catherine II :

– completely negative — 45.2%

– rather negative — 16.8%

– somewhat negative, somewhat positive — 20.6%

– rather positive — 6.1%

– completely positive — 6.5%

– I don’t know this one – 1.3%

– difficult to answer — 3.5%

The attitude towards  Pushkin, according to the survey, is as follows:

– completely negative — 26.5%

– rather negative — 13.3%

– somewhat negative, somewhat positive — 28.8%

– rather positive — 11%

– completely positive — 17.2%

– I don’t know such a thing – 0.6%

– difficult to answer — 2.6%

The attitude towards  Bandera was as follows:

– completely negative — 11.3%

– rather negative — 5.5%

– somewhat negative, somewhat positive — 13.9%

– rather positive — 21.9%

– completely positive — 45.5%

– I don’t know such a thing – 0%

– difficult to answer — 1.9%

Citizens’ opinion about Mikhail Bulgakov:

– completely negative — 19%

– rather negative — 12.6%

– somewhat negative, somewhat positive — 23.2%

– rather positive — 18.7%

– completely positive 20%

– I don’t know this one — 1.6

– difficult to answer — 4.8

Attitude of Odesa residents towards  Mykola Gogol:

– completely negative — 6.1%

– rather negative — 8.7%

– difficult to answer — 3.2%

In the study, there was also the question of moving the date of the city’s foundation to 1415, when the fortress/settlement of the Kochubeys was first mentioned, on the site of which Odesa later developed.

It turned out that 48.1% of respondents support the transfer of the date of establishment, 15.9% do not support it, and 32.8% believe that this issue is not timely.

The research was conducted in July – September 2024 and was implemented in two stages. The first stage is to conduct a nationwide representative survey using the telephone interview method (SATI). Geography of the study: all of Ukraine (except the territory temporarily not under the control of the government of Ukraine).

The sample population of the quantitative study is representative of the adult population of Ukraine (aged 18 and over) in terms of basic socio-demographic characteristics (gender, age, type of settlement) and regional distribution.

The second stage is conducting a representative survey using the telephone interview method (SATI). Geography of the study: Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipro, Odesa. The sample population of the quantitative study is representative of the adult population of Ukraine (aged 18 and over) in terms of basic socio-demographic characteristics (gender, age, type of settlement) and regional distribution.

  1. When the old people have died, these numbers will change, being more negative towards everything ruskie and more positive with everything Ukrainian.
