Most Greenlanders Oppose Joining US, Poll Says

Only 6% of Greenlanders want their island to become part of the United States.

85% of Greenlanders do not want their Arctic island to become part of the United States. Almost half of Greenlanders also believe that US President Donald Trump’s interest in the territory is a threat, according to a Verian poll, Reuters reports .

The survey also found that only 6% of Greenlanders want their island to become part of the United States, while another 9% were undecided.

In addition, the poll shows that 45% see Trump’s interest in Greenland as a threat, 43% as an opportunity, and 13% are undecided.

“Greenland enjoys many of the same social benefits as Denmark, such as universal health care and free education. Only 8% of respondents said they would like to change their Danish citizenship to American, 55% said they would prefer to be Danish citizens, and 37% were undecided,” the article emphasized.

At the same time, on January 28, after meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stressed that she fully supports the principle of respect for international borders.

“I am glad if the survey is an expression that many Greenlanders would like to see continued close cooperation with Denmark. Perhaps in a different form than what we know today, because things change over time,” she said in an interview with Berlingske in response to the survey.

Also on January 27, Denmark announced that it would spend $2 billion to strengthen its military presence in the Arctic.

Trump’s Greenland Plans – Latest News

As UNIAN reported, Donald Trump said after his inauguration that the US needs Greenland to fight Russia and China. According to him, Denmark is not capable of ensuring proper control over this territory, so the US wants to take it.

At the same time, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said his country could deploy troops to Greenland because of Trump’s threats. He noted that France would help Denmark if it needed it.
