“Moscow has until evening”: Macron issues ultimatum to Putin on ceasefire

12.05.2025

French President Emmanuel Macron said Russia had until the evening to agree to a 30-day ceasefire proposed by the US and EU, or face sanctions.

Macron made this statement while speaking to journalists on Monday, May 12, Le Figaro reports. He said he would resume talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders, as the ceasefire offer is valid until Monday evening.

“This afternoon I will speak with Volodymyr Zelensky and my European colleagues. The framework has been given. Everything is clear,” Macron said on the sidelines of a visit to the site of the Franco-Italian optical group EssilorLuxottica in the French municipality of Vissou, in the Essonne department.

He added that “we all need to be sensible now.”

“Either Russia is serious and wants peace. Or it is not serious and we must tighten sanctions ,” Macron said.

As OBOZ.UA reported, on May 12, Germany demanded that Russia agree to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine until the end of Monday and threatened new sanctions and increased military aid to Ukraine.

The head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Andriy Sybiga, in turn, stated that Moscow is completely ignoring the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, and its occupiers continue to storm the front.

On May 10, the leaders of the “coalition of the willing” put forward a proposal to begin an unconditional 30-day ceasefire on May 12 and promised, in the event of Moscow’s refusal, to increase aid to Ukraine and pressure on Russia from the European Union and the United States.

On Sunday night, Putin said that Russia was demanding that direct talks with Ukraine be resumed in Turkey from May 15, but ignored the offer of a truce. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zakharova said that the Kremlin leader allegedly “clearly said” that first there would be talks “about the root causes,” and then “we can talk about a truce.”

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday evening that Ukraine should immediately agree to Russia’s proposal, to which President Volodymyr Zelensky responded that he was waiting for Putin in Istanbul in person.

China supported the US and EU proposal for a ceasefire and expressed hope that Ukraine and Russia will be able to continue dialogue aimed at achieving peace.

Kremlin spokesman  Dmitry Peskov said  Moscow was in favor of peace talks, but did not confirm Putin’s direct participation in a potential meeting in Istanbul on May 15.
