Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Lavrov, have repeatedly used WWII-era terminology like “Nazism” and “Führer” when describing the Ukrainian government and its supporters in Europe. This rhetoric has been a consistent part of Russia’s messaging since 2022. Germany, Ukraine, the EU, US, and UN have all rejected these characterizations.
The Kremlin has paired diplomatic statements with historical accusations, including claims that European countries are enabling “Nazism.” Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul recently rejected similar accusations from Moscow, calling claims that Germany’s support for Ukraine is driven by “revanchist fantasies” a diversion from Russia’s own actions.
Germany is a major supplier of military, financial, and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. This has marked a significant shift from its pre-2022 policy of not supplying weapons to conflict zones. German officials frame support as defending European security, not charity: “Support for Ukraine remains the position of the majority in Germany, but… this is not about generosity or simply helping, but about the security of Europe and, therefore, of Germany itself”. 🇷🇺🇩🇪🇺🇦

That Kasparov line cuts straight to the core of the Kremlin’s Ukraine strategy. Kasparov, as a former Soviet dissident and longtime Putin critic, is basically saying: for autocrats, the most dangerous export isn’t weapons. It’s an example.
Why Putin would fear a democratic Ukraine?
The “example effect”: Russia and Ukraine share deep cultural, linguistic, and historical ties. If Ukraine builds a stable democracy with rising living standards and EU integration, it shows Russians that Slavic, post-Soviet countries can function without authoritarianism. That undermines Putin’s argument that Russia needs a “strong hand” and that liberal democracy equals chaos.
Regime legitimacy: Putin’s system rests on a narrative of Russian exceptionalism, “sovereign democracy,” and the idea that Western-style governance doesn’t work for the “Russian world.” A Ukraine that chooses Europe and succeeds becomes a living counter-narrative on his border.
Domestic precedent: The 2004 Orange Revolution and 2014 Maidan were both citizen movements that ousted leaders seen as Moscow-aligned. From the Kremlin’s perspective, that’s contagious. NATO is external and can be deterred with missiles. A popular revolt is internal and much harder to stop once the idea spreads.
Why NATO vs. democracy matters here?
NATO tanks are a conventional military threat. Russia has doctrines, nukes, and geography to deal with that. A democratic Ukraine is an ideological threat. You can’t shell an idea. As Kasparov frames it, tanks threaten the state. Democracy threatens the story the state tells to justify itself.
This isn’t new. The USSR spent decades jamming Radio Free Europe and building the Berlin Wall not because of fear of invasion, but because of fear of comparison. East Germans seeing West German prosperity did more damage to Soviet legitimacy than any tank division.
