According to him, a historic event took place on December 28 – finally, the monument to the Russian Empress was dismantled.

“Thanks to the residents of Odessa, who expressed their position that the Russian imperial heritage has no place in modern, legal, democratic Ukraine. Thanks to the deputies of the Odessa City Council for making the right decision,” Marchenko said.

As UNIAN reported, on November 30, the Odessa City Council decided to dismantle the monument to the “Founders of Odessa”, the central figure of which is the statue of Empress Catherine II. According to the decision, the statue of the Empress should be transferred to the Odessa Art Museum. In addition, the other four sculptures of the monument to the “Founders of Odessa”, which are museum objects of the state part of the Museum Fund of Ukraine and are registered by the municipal institution “Odessa Municipal Museum of Private Collections named after I. A. V. Bleshunov”, will also be dismantled and transferred to the museum.

In the future, it is planned that the sculptural composition, which now stands on Ekaterininskaya Square, will be transferred to a special thematic area, equipped in the park.
