Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has proposed renaming part of the United States “Mexican America” in response to newly elected US President Donald Trump’s idea to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” Politico reports .
“Obviously, the Gulf of Mexico is a name recognized by the United Nations,” she said during a press briefing.
Sheinbaum also showed on a 17th-century historical map that part of what is now the United States was previously controlled by Mexico.
“Why don’t we call them ‘Mexican America’? It sounds cute, doesn’t it?” she added.
In addition, Sheinbaum joked that Trump apparently doesn’t know who the current leader of Mexico is, recalling the country’s former president Felipe Calderon and former Minister of Public Security Garcia Luna, who was sentenced to more than 38 years in an American prison for accepting bribes from a drug cartel.
“I think he was told that Felipe Calderon and Garcia Luna still rule Mexico. But no. The people rule Mexico,” she stressed.
Despite such a humorous response to Trump, Sheinbaum said that she wants to improve relations with the new US president for the benefit of their countries, the publication shared.
