German Chancellor Friedrich Merz believes that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin was only pretending to be ready for direct negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
He said this at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Toulon after intergovernmental consultations between the two countries, DW reports, Censor.NET reports .
Merz said he was “not surprised” by the Kremlin’s delay in direct talks, as it is “part of Putin’s strategy.”
He added that Russia’s war against Ukraine could last “many months” and called for joint consultations between Europe and the United States on further steps.
“I strongly advocate that we – Europeans, together with the American government – carefully discuss the next steps,” Merz said.
