Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should be involved in the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said, writes Tageѕсһау .
Merz said it was unacceptable to discuss territorial issues without going through Europe and Ukraine. He spoke about the need for Zelensky to be present in Alaska.
“We hope and assume that the Ukrainian government, President Zelensky, will participate in this meeting. In any case, we cannot allow territorial issues between Russia and America to be discussed or even resolved bypassing the Europeans and Ukrainians,” Merz said.
He added that he believed the American government shared this view and would act in close coordination.
Merz added that he would have a phone call with Trump later on Sunday regarding his meeting with Putin in Alaska.
He also said that the events in Alaska should not remain without consequences. According to him, the consequences could be either increased pressure on Russia, or Russia “itself admits that this war cannot continue.” The Chancellor expressed hope that the summit would also end with a decision on a ceasefire.
