Matt Frei was joined by Ukrainian MP Halyna Yanchenko and Jonas Malmgrea, a Swedish investor focused on defence, to discuss what the war means for Europe.
Europe’s leaders are currently gathered at the Munich Security Conference.
Sir Keir Starmer was met with applause at the Munich Security Conference after he claimed the country was “not the Britain of the Brexit years anymore.”
The Prime Minster made the speech on the second day of the conference attended by global leaders and figures.
He added the UK will seek “deeper economic integration” with the European Union and “move closer to the single market” in more sectors, as the “status quo is not fit for purpose”.
The PM also told the conference Europe must be ready to fight as it faces a growing threat from Russia.

This war is absolutely black and white. Today, Russia is waging war against civilians — striking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with missiles and doing everything possible to make ordinary Ukrainians freeze in their homes when it’s –20°C (–4°F) outside. This is the tactic of war criminals.
Unfortunately, my pessimistic prediction came true – Russian army used the cold and freezing temperatures to strike in the most painful way.
Just imagine how much weaponry was used to leave Ukrainians freezing in their homes.
Ukrainian air defense shot down or suppressed 450 aerial targets — 38 missiles and 412 drones of various types.
Russia used the cold as a weapon to cause maximum damage.
Outside, temperatures have dropped to –20°C, and Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro are without electricity or/and heating.
This is deliberate terror against civilians.
And this is yet another proof that the so-called “energy ceasefire” was simply an attempt to mislead President Trump. Russia used this time to reload its missiles…

It’s hard to overstate what this means for ordinary Ukrainian families. Targeting energy infrastructure in winter isn’t abstract — it’s people sitting in freezing homes, hospitals struggling to function, and communities simply trying to endure day to day.
Infrastructure has been targeted in most modern conflicts, including Iraq and Afghanistan, to disrupt communications and a nation’s ability to sustain itself. But that doesn’t lessen the very real human suffering it causes.
Ukraine’s resilience in the face of this is remarkable, but the cost to everyday civilians is profound.

Where are the anti-Russian protests in the streets of the cities in the US? Where are the anti-Russian protests on college and universities campuses?
Protesters show their colors while Ukrainians are showing their colors in blood red.

You are right. Putin does not want peace, and it makes no sense to talk to him at this moment.
Putin wants Ukraine and does not value human lives.
We in the free world need to increase our support for Ukraine. One simple and straightforward way to do that is to enforce the sanctions.
Another way is to take action against the shadow fleet.
There are plenty of things we can do at a ridiculously low cost that would save millions of innocent Ukrainians from death and extreme suffering.
