Ukraine will probably survive without American aid, but at a much greater cost.
It remains debatable how much the suspension of American aid will affect Ukraine . But one thing has already become clear: the United States is removing itself from the Russian-Ukrainian war. This is reported by The New York Times .
As the author of the publication notes, in March the White House had already suspended all military aid to Ukraine for about a week, which was one of the consequences of a public quarrel in the Oval Office between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky. And since then, the Trump administration has only added reasons to believe that the US is no longer friendly to Ukraine.
“Ukraine is no longer a priority, no longer at the center of US foreign policy. At least Trump is very honest about this with Ukrainians,” People’s Deputy Solomiya Bobrovska, who represents the Defense and Intelligence Committee in the Verkhovna Rada, said in a comment to the publication.
Today, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are armed with 8 Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems, 6 of which are used to defend Kyiv. Without new supplies of anti-aircraft missiles, it will be much more difficult for Ukraine to defend the capital, Bobrovska noted. “This is a huge problem,” she added.
In her opinion, the halt in the supply of artillery ammunition is less painful for Ukraine, as domestic production is growing and supplies from European partners are increasing.
According to The New York Times, Ukraine is expected to receive up to $11 billion in weapons and equipment from the United States this year. These are weapons manufactured from scratch by American military factories under funding agreed upon during President Biden’s presidency.
Ukrainian serviceman Oleg Voroshilovsky, who commands a counter-drone unit near Kyiv, assured the author of the publication that Ukraine will be able to survive the suspension of these supplies from the US, although it will come at a significant “price.”
“We will find weapons. It will be harder. Many more people will die,” he said.
