Macron: Trump won’t block new sanctions if Europe moves first

French President Emmanuel Macron said he believes the United States may support stronger sanctions against Russia, despite previous comments by President Donald Trump suggesting otherwise, Politico reported on June 17.

Macron said he discussed new sanctions with Trump during the G7 summit, and the U.S. president signaled openness to the idea.

“He responded quite positively. That’s very good news for me,” Macron said.

Trump reportedly told Macron he wouldn’t stand in the way of new sanctions backed by Republican lawmakers.

“If, in the coming weeks, Europeans and Americans implement these sanctions together, it could truly change the situation, because Russia’s economic resilience will be in question,” Macron said.

Trump had previously indicated he would not support further sanctions unless European countries took the lead, arguing that sanctions “cost us a lot of money.”

Trump left the G7 summit in Kananaskis a day early, meaning he will miss Tuesday’s planned meeting between G7 leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

On June 10, the European Union unveiled its 18th sanctions package against Russia. Among other measures, it includes a ban on transactions related to the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines, effectively barring any EU operator from engaging in direct or indirect business with either project.

Earlier, on May 20, the EU adopted its 17th sanctions package, targeting nearly 200 vessels in Russia’s shadow fleet.

That same day, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the threat of additional sanctions could push Russia to walk away from ceasefire negotiations.

Senator Lindsey Graham also stated that the U.S. Senate is prepared to bring a new Russia sanctions bill to a vote if progress on ending the war in Ukraine remains stalled.

The EU have implemented two sanction packages in the last two months. The US have had sanctions on the table for months, but the WH say the EU needs to take the lead.

    • Krasnov just said of Macron (on the Iran topic) that :

      “He always gets it wrong”

      So that doesn’t inspire confidence.

      • “(on the Iran topic)”

If he was referring to Iran, that may not apply to what Macron said about sanctions.

But *nothing* trumpkov says inspires any confidence – remember, TACO.

      “He always gets it wrong”

So that doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.
