Macron suggested that Biden and Scholz radically change their strategy towards Russia: WSJ

Macron tried to convince Biden and Scholz to change the strategic approach to Russia and the war it started

French President Emmanuel Macron held confidential conversations with US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz regarding the war in Ukraine. He convinced his interlocutors to change the West’s strategy towards Russia, which had launched a full-scale aggression against a neighboring state.

Macron is convinced that Western countries must maintain strategic uncertainty regarding the Russian Federation so that, if necessary, they can resort to all possible options, including military intervention. This is stated in the material of The Wall Street Journal .

The publication notes that Macron’s proposal is radically different from the position adhered to by the Biden administration from the very beginning of Russian aggression against Ukraine. Washington has focused on avoiding actions that US officials believe could escalate the conflict. Macron is seeking to blur the so-called red lines set by the West in supporting Ukraine, leaving Moscow guessing how far this support can go.

However, sources note that Biden was skeptical about Macron’s arguments. He remains wary of provoking Moscow. Scholz did not like the idea of the French leader either: he believes that such a change in strategy could divide the allies and drag NATO into the war as a party to the conflict.

Macron called Biden and Scholz on the phone in February to tell them he wanted to use the upcoming Paris summit to send a message to Putin. Western capitals must stop ruling out military options, Macron said, telling leaders he wanted to unveil a new approach after summit. Scholz responded that if Macron did so publicly, the chancellor and other leaders would be forced to override him. He strongly advised Macron not to take the step, saying it could create a sense of disunity among allies, the officials said.

The topic of the presence of Western military and civilians in Ukraine, raised by Macron, has provoked heated discussions in the West about how allies should respond to the death of any of these military or civilians as a result of a Russian strike.

At the same time, the publication quotes an unnamed American official, the White House is concerned that if French troops are sent to Ukraine, they could become a priority target for Russia. And this, they say, could involve both France and other Western countries in the war.

At the same time, Macron responded to these arguments, notes The Wall Street Journal, reasonably responding that if Russia targets French troops, this will not mean the ultimate need to attract NATO or US troops, because, for example, in military campaigns in Africa, where the French suffered losses, they did not call the allies for help.

The publication adds that Macron shared his opinion on the need to move to strategic uncertainty with Western leaders who gathered at the Elysee Palace on February 26 to discuss support for Ukraine. After this, the French President invited Scholz to express his position on what he had heard – and he opposed this idea. The leaders of the Netherlands, Poland and Greece also “politely rejected” Macron’s proposal. Only the Prime Minister of Estonia spoke out in support of the French president, saying that it was time for the West to stop discussing what they will not do – and move on to discussing what they intend to do.

“Despite the prevailing opposition at the summit, Macron still said in a conversation with journalists that although there was no consensus on sending troops, nothing could be ruled out,” the publication concluded.

Let us remind you that on March 30 it became known that Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau discussed support for Ukraine.

During the conversation, the leaders spoke about the long-term commitments of Canada and France to support Ukraine as it defends its sovereignty and territorial integrity from Russian aggression. They also agreed that it is necessary to further strengthen support for Ukraine.

Who would’ve thought this time last year that Macron would make such a U-turn in his attitude? I think he can forget about convincing Scholz about the necessity to be tougher with mafia land. Scholz was never a real man, and he never will be. Biden? I also doubt that the old dust bag will grow a pair larger than peas.

    • Yeah, it’s a surprising change of policy, indeed. I can only guess that Macron must have “seen the light”, had an epiphany that opened his eyes to the evil nature of Putin. For much too long, the French president had followed a course of engaging the dictator in discussions instead, had been the last Western head of state who regularly phoned with him. Something must have happened that convinced him this was a hopeless endeavour. What could have changed his mind? Shocking intelligence information about Putin’s evil ways, I guess. Perhaps a planned FSB plot going directly against Macron himself? We don’t know and can only hope for reading one distant day about that in his memoirs. 😕

When the nation that invented modern diplomacy talks that openly, calling a söade a spade and a luar a liar, that’s really a new era! The gloves have come off, a present of bullshit won’t be politely accepted anymore, but answered with a slap on the face. Enough already with all that Russian propaganda, kick the Putin minions’ pathetic asses! 😠
