Macron rejected the idea of a quick ceasefire in Ukraine without preconditions and security guarantees.

French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation. In his speech, he touched on a variety of topics, including the challenges facing the country and Europe as a whole, as well as nuclear deterrence. The French leader’s words were quoted by BFMTV .

It is noted that Macron spoke about the threat from Russia to the security of France and all of Europe. He emphasized that the war in Ukraine is dangerous for all European countries.

“If a country can invade its neighbor in Europe with impunity, then no one can be sure of anything anymore. The Russian threat exists and it affects European countries,” he said.

Macron also rejected the idea of a quick ceasefire in Ukraine without preconditions and security guarantees. According to him, “peace cannot be built under the dictate of Russia.” Nevertheless, the French leader emphasized that he welcomes all real steps towards sustainable peace in Ukraine.

“All the initiatives that contribute to the establishment of peace are moving in the right direction, and this evening I would like to pay tribute to them,” the French president added.

Macron also mentioned the idea of sending European troops to Ukraine. He explained that soldiers could only be sent after a ceasefire:

“Peace in Ukraine may require the deployment of European forces. They will not go to fight on the front lines today, but they will be there after the peace is signed to ensure that it is fully respected.”

In addition, the French President announced that next week his country will gather in Paris the chiefs of staff of countries ready to guarantee peace in Ukraine in the future.

Macron also mentioned in his speech that France has a special status in European defense due to its nuclear weapons. He said that “the decision has always been and will remain in the hands of the president” when talking about nuclear disarmament.

The French president has proposed a strategic debate on protecting France’s nuclear deterrent to protect European allies. He added that he wants Paris’s European partners to no longer depend on the American deterrent.

In addition, Macron announced additional investments in the defense of France and other European countries. He recalled that a special summit of European Union leaders will be held in Brussels tomorrow.

“We will take decisive steps. Several decisions will be taken. Member states will be able to increase their military spending without factoring it into their deficit,” the French leader said.
