The withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in 2021 dealt a very serious blow to Biden’s prestige
It seems that no American president has ever had such a low rating in his first year in office. The image of a weak old man created serious problems for the government.
The president managed to regain leadership thanks to the events in Ukraine. He began to prepare the world for the upcoming invasion and confrontation with Moscow (despite Zelenskyy’s opposition), provided the first serious weapons to repel an attack (the delivery of several dozen Javelins during the Trump era was more of a symbol than a defensive factor), and so on.
You remember the subsequent events as well as I. Thus, the political situation in the United States probably saved Ukraine’s sovereignty.
It seems that Macron’s recent statements are of a very similar nature. He has never claimed to be a strong leader, and the attitude toward him has been respective of that. Just think of Putin’s assessment in a conversation with Burns on the eve of the invasion of Ukraine (described in Burns’ book): “The situation in Europe is the most convenient for me – Merkel is gone, and Macron is a weakling.”
I don’t understand much about the internal political realities of France, but it seems that under the pressure of a number of factors, there is a demand for a leader who is much tougher and more decisive (not Obama, but Reagan, relatively speaking).
And Macron is trying to meet this public demand. To the best of his ability, of course.

Looking around Congress you’ll not find a film star come president. It’s more like the Muppet show, but not as funny.
I’m extremely jealous of France.
We in the USA are stuck with either the MAGA-Commies (who want to cut Ukraine off) or Slow-Walk-Joe (who gives enough to maintain the stalemate but not enough for a Ukrainian victory).
What you call MAGA-commies, I call MAGAts. Not all of the MAGA types are so stupid as to call for cut off of Ukraine aid. Biden is just a commie.
The Javelins Trump sent to Ukraine is what stood between Ukraine and defeat.
Although I seem to always broadly condemn MAGA for our problems, you could be right that to condemn all MAGAs just isn’t right. Unfortunately I don’t know of any MAGAs who have stood up against the stupidity and idiotic policies advocated by MAGAs such as Goetz who exemplifies and appears to speak for all MAGAs. Goetz has caus3d more chaos and has not helped this country. Sir Ohengineer such extreme views, right or left are harmful to the US. If history shows us anything, this country is best when we take moderate positions and yes take elements from the left and right. In fact history has shown us that any country taking extreme positions (left or right) never works. NEVER
You’re so right, Cap. The far right are just as dangerous as the far left. What we’re seeing in our country is a move towards the first. I just hope that enough people will see it this way too and act accordingly during the election.
Before you get jealous, let’s first hope that Macron will back up all those words with more military aid.
